At Garvin Homes, we recently had the pleasure of bringing a kitchen addition to completion in Plymouth, Minnesota — a project that showcases a warm, modern aesthetic and a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and quality.
This kitchen addition is a beautiful example of how expanded space, customized materials, and natural light can come together to elevate a home. Rooted in a practical layout and finished with timeless materials, the space strikes a balance between functional living and beautiful design — the very qualities that define a dream kitchen.
Plymouth is a gem of a city just west of Minneapolis — known for its strong sense of community, great schools, and natural beauty. It’s also home to Emser Tile’s regional office, one of the trusted vendors on this project. That local connection added a nice layer of collaboration to the process, making it easy to access materials and coordinate finishes that met our design vision.
This kitchen is not just a renovation — it’s an addition, a true expansion of livable space. From the start, the homeowners wanted a kitchen that felt open and inviting, with room to cook, gather, and enjoy everyday moments. Our goal was to deliver a design that supported that lifestyle — and felt as good as it looked.
To make that vision possible, we expanded the home’s footprint. A bump-out created additional square footage for the kitchen and dining area, allowing for a more generous layout and improved flow between zones. This wasn’t just about making the kitchen larger — it was about creating an experience of openness and ease.
The addition also includes a new screen porch off the kitchen. With its own fireplace, the porch extends the living space and brings in natural elements. While it’s a separate area, the screen porch enhances the feel of the kitchen itself, offering a visual and spatial connection to the outdoors that complements the interior finishes.
One of the most defining aspects of this kitchen addition is its relationship with light. We worked with a custom Marvin Windows package, chosen for its clean profiles, high-quality craftsmanship, and ability to frame the outdoors beautifully. These windows let in generous amounts of natural light, softening the entire space and enhancing the materials inside.
The role of natural light in kitchen design can’t be overstated — especially in Minnesota, where long winters make light a precious resource. These windows help create a kitchen that feels bright and energized, even on gray days.
When it came to finishes, we focused on materials that bring warmth and texture to the space — starting with the cabinetry for the kitchen. We partnered with Sean’s Cabinetry for a custom two-color layout.
The base cabinets are white oak, finished in a natural tone that highlights the character of the wood grain. The upper cabinets offer a light, classic contrast, creating a balanced and layered look.

The floors in both the kitchen and dining area are white oak as well, giving the space visual continuity and a natural foundation. Paired with sleek quartz countertops, the combination is both practical and beautiful — easy to maintain, but rich in detail.
The backsplash is tiled with Emser Tile — a product known for its clean design and reliable performance. In this kitchen, it adds depth and a refined texture that complements the surrounding materials without competing for attention.
To complete the space, we installed a customized lighting package that includes a mix of pendants, recessed mini can lights, and under-cabinet lighting. Each fixture plays a specific role in how the kitchen functions throughout the day.
Pendant lights over the peninsula add focused light and a touch of contrast with their matte black finish. Recessed lighting ensures even illumination, while under-cabinet lights offer task lighting exactly where it’s needed. The layering of these elements gives the kitchen flexibility — it can feel bright and energetic or soft and ambient, depending on the time of day and how the space is used.
